Scott Weiland, the former lead singer for Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver has passed away at the age of 48 late on Thursday. Jane’s Addiction/former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist, Dave Navarro first tweeted the news of Weiland’s death at 9:01 PT Thursday night, though he since has deleted the tweet.

While it the Bloomington, Minnesota Police Department did release a statement, actual cause of death was not reported, though it’s assumed to be related to substance abused. Weiland has had a a long roller coaster of a history related to substance abuse, including heroin.

While sad, it’s not really a surprise to hear the news. It’ll be interesting to hear what and if any of his former STP or Velvet Revolver bandmates make statements.

I had the day of background music at work today all queued up to be a Led Zeppelin fest, but instead I’m going to play a bunch of Stone Temple Pilots in honor of the passing of their former singer.

In between his bouts, I had the privilege of seeing them perform live in Chapel Hill at the Dean E. Smith Center. It was a great concert, and glad I got to see them perform live.
