Just once, it’s be cool to see an article about the DeLorean without a Back to the Future reference. Sure, without the trilogy, the DeLorean wouldn’t be the level of icon they are now. But just once, the car should stand on its own. Especially with news like this.

The successor company of the original DeLorean Motor Company, DeLorean Motor Company of Texas, is shooting to have brand-new DMC-12s built as early as next year. In order to do so, they’ve got to get all of their major component suppliers lined up.

Theses new cars will be updated with modern technology but will obviously retain the classic gull-wing doors and stainless steel and its 80’s exterior styling.

The original was also quite anemic with its Renault 132 hp engine. This new incarnation will sport a more impressive power plant, with currently one domestic and two foreign engine suppliers being considered for the DeLorean revisit. The DMC of Texas said their front-runner is a naturally-aspirated V6 producing between 300-400 horsepower.

Now comes the bad news: the price tag is expected to be around $100,000 — quite the jump from the original’s $15,000 – $25,000 (depending on when in 1982/1983 you were shopping for one). If I were buying a car with that price tag, I’d be looking at a Tesla, not a DeLorean replica.
