Hard Resetting the Garmin Edge 500

So much like many of the lockups and problems I used to have with my Garmin Edge 305, even the ugliest of ugliest problems with the Edge 500 has been able to be fixed via the two-finger button combination that hard reset the unit. With the Edge 500, that two button combination is the Power/Light (upper-lefthand corner) and the diagonally across and down Lap/Reset button. From the off state, hold those two together until it powers up and a prompt appears to reset user data. Obviously, try other methods before this because you will have to reset your data screens, you bike profiles, etc. For me, it worked to get my Garmin Edge 500 scrambled data screens back, and again had my abundance of data is available from my handlebars.

Just wanted to share this tip with fellow Garmin Edge users, as my original post about resetting the Edge 305 continue to get a lot of traffic and comments thanking me for posting that tip. Hope this one shows up in Google as well, and helps fellow cyclists.

  1. Thank you this is exactly what I needed. My Garmin was stuck only showing 15.8 miles and I could not figure out how to reset it. This solved my issue.

  2. Thanks for this, hope it works, my heart rate was stuck on 244bpm, a little disconcerting when climbing hills!

  4. I called Garmin, your procedure will reset USER data, to return the unit to factory specifications, hold the two left buttons and the top right button from the off state (power/light, page/menu and start/stop) until the prompt to reset is presented, then just follow the instructions. Everything is erased after that procedure, so prepare to play with the menus. It seems these units have a buffer that gets rather full after some time so resetting may be a yearly task!

  5. These suggestions are from the “off” position. Do you know how to reset from a frozen screen? I was attempting to delete a ride before it uploaded as I’d forgotten to turn off the timer before loading my bike onto my car and the data is . . . unbelievable!
    🙂 Anyway, it’s frozen 🙁

  6. I have the same problem as Melissa. I can’t get the device to power off to perform the rest of the procedure. It’s frozen on “Working” and has been for two hours. Guess I’ll have to wait for the charge to run down and hope that recharging doesn’t bring it back up with the same problem.
