Google Fiber is signing up people — as of just minutes ago (9am) in the Triangle, if you’re lucky enough to be in the town of Morrisville, NC.
Morrisville is a no-brainer as to where to start offering Google’s high speed offerings in the triangle. It was the first area in North Carolina where Google crews broke ground, but the real reason it’s first is because of the existing infrastructure.
Google and others connect to the Internet backbone in Morrisville, so it makes it easy to start in the town adjacent and holding parts of the Research Triangle Park.
“We’ll start installing it as fast as we can,” Google Fiber site lead Erik Garr said in an interview. He said the initial the service area covers “a large majority” of Morrisville’s footprint.
Garr added that this is just the tip of the iceberg for the rollout in North Carolina’s Triangle communities.
“We still have a ton of work to do. This is very much a work-in-progress moment.”
An email sent to Triangle residents this morning confirms the plans:
We wanted to share the news. Google Fiber is coming soon to the Triangle. Over the next few weeks, crews will start connecting homes and businesses in Morrisville.
What does this mean for the rest of the Triangle? We’re still in the process of laying thousands of miles of fiber-optic cable throughout the area. It will take time before all areas can sign up, but we’ll make sure you’re among the first to know when your home or business is ready for Fiber. And you can always follow us on Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.
Looking forward to getting you connected,
The Google Fiber Triangle team”
The Google Fiber Triangle team has yet to release any further plans in the rollout, but seem to be responsive and communicative when there’s something worth sharing.
