Another Tuesday night, another Ace Speed Away “C” race under my belt on the oval out in Altamahaw, North Carolina.

Threats of rain (50% chance from 5pm to 9pm) kept some away from tonight’s race series. But the season’s winding down and Greg and I wanted to race and wanted to earn points for the series trophy.

We did. Several of us agreed that there were some tonight not worth chasing down if they broke away. They’d blow their load and end up getting gobbled up. Well, we misjudged an unknown racer and the dude ended up getting a lap on the field, which is a really impressive feat out at Ace’s oval track.

The group tonight was a lot better about doing some work, though we never got organized to chase down that lone rider. That aside, I thought Greg and I raced smart and spent a lot of time leading the pack, without wearing ourselves down. There were two prime laps, which although the prizes are shitty, it’s still bragging rights. I ended up getting that prime, making two Ace races in a row where I’ve snagged a prime lap.. like I need more t-shirts, but it’s cool to win the primes.

With just over a lap to go, the guy that won last week took off and we all accelerated to hang on. I felt great, but just couldn’t overtake any of the four wheels immediately in front of me. I crossed in fifth place, Greg in sixth. The bigger picture here though is that the Ace races over the summer are a series. First place in the “C” race is wrapped up by the guy who won the last one (and I believe got second tonight). But really cool is that as long as Greg and I both race next Tuesday, we’ve got the silver and bronze series trophies. Going into tonight’s race, I had a point lead on Greg, and might have gained a point on him tonight. Regardless, the Tri-Cyclists are going to take spots two and three for the 2008 Ace Speed Away Series. I’m totally psyched about that!

  1. You guys did a great job and it really felt like you were controlling the race. That guy who won was an anomaly. Lapping the field in a flat 5’s race should = automatic upgrade to 4’s, IMHO.
