Specialized Technology Dominates 2010 Tour de France

SpecializedAs quite the Specialized fanboy, it was very nice to see so much Specialized technology being featured and prevailing in this year's Tour de France. Congrats to Specialized for continuing to get their name out there, and obviously they're doing something right to get such a great set of athletes riding and using their products — names such as Alberto Contador, Andy Schleck and Fabian Cancellara to name a few.

How Does Diet Soda Cause Weight Gain?

Man, maybe I need to lay off the Coke Zero *shudder*. I've been riding pretty much daily, but maybe I need to switch to just water to see how much of a change this will have. I think August will be a month of nothing but water and my sports drinks when training. I'll post back with results. But I'm definitely making my body work harder, putting it in an acidic state often.

Check out the video below for a great explanation, complete with visualization.

Bicycle Work Stand for $10 in 5 Minutes

This is pretty cool. It's obviously not as sexy as a nice Park Tool professional work stand, but pretty cool and pretty cheap.

Try New Headphones or Earbuds with Old Music, Tests Before Buying

I go through a lot of earbuds and a fair amount of headphones, so having some tests and ways to ascertain how good they really are, here are some tests/ways, thanks to LifeHacker.com. The tests are a good first pass to help test new listening devices, and the tip to use older less produced music is a great tip as well.

14 Ways to Eat Like Cyclist at the Tour de France

Bike Route w ArrowMan, Keefer Madness has been all about cycling this week. Sure, it's had a lot of cycling posts over the past five years or so, but this past week has been nothing but cycling between the Tour de France and the fact, I've been able to consistently get back in the saddle.

Regardless, here's another great list from Bicycling.com — this one is a bunch of foods great for cyclists in training.

10 Training Fundamentals for Cyclists

Bicycling.com has a lot of nice little articles and lists, some really basic. This little list possesses several "duhs" for those of us in the saddle regualry. But there are some nice friendly reminders. I especially like #5 — "Do what sucks. "

Incorporate Physical Activity into Your Work Breaks for Better Health

sign: black bike on yellowThe bottom line in the article below is for the best possible health, incorporate physical activity into all your breaks. While it's admirable to get a workout in before or after work (or in my case at lunch), it doesn't negate all the time a lot of of spending sitting at a desk, in meetings, etc. My suggestion: drink and drink lots (of water). This will force breaks. This will force you to get up and walk to the bathroom multiple times of day.

That being said, I won't be cutting out my lunch bike rides. Whether or not the offset sedentary time or not, they make a dent and do well for boosting metabolism, relieving stress and just getting fresh air. So overall, my personal opinion — use the Lifehacker article below to help supplement and and add onto what you already do physically. Don't cut out a workout routine based on statistics. There's no way that removing physical activity would ever make sense.

A Legendary Collapse: Armstrong Says, 'This Tour is Finished for Me.'

The Versus Tour de France commentary was sprinkled over and over with the fact that Sunday's stage 8 — the first with any sizable climbing would not necessarily win the 2010 Tour for any rider, but it certainly could lose it for any given rider. I just would have never thought it was Lance Armstrong.

I didn't get to see the entire stage yesterday, but it sounds like after being tangled up in three crashes on the first stage (and narrowly missing one just a few km into the beginning of the stage) in the Alps, Armstrong was a beaten man. In a way, it is sort of refreshing. Despite the fact that the guy possesses physical traits to make him the perfect candidate for a professional cycling career (which he's shown 7 times over), such as lungs that are more efficient at higher altitudes and a body that processes lactic acid with ease, he's still human. Like every other human being, age and life take its toll on the body, mind and soul.

While I, like so many else out there were really really pulling for the guy to have an epic battle with former teammate Alberto Contador, but looks like it's time to focus on a much younger rider to do battle for the rest of the tour — Mr. Andy Schleck of Team Saxo Bank. Regardless, hope Armstrong is able to complete and enjoy the rest of the Tour, including a few stage wins.

Just wanted to take a real quick moment to say happy 4th of July. Hope you're having as much fun with friends and family as we are! Daily posts on Keefer Madness to resume soon… promise!
