EVH Guitar Hero ControllerIt’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of the rhythm game genre on my Xbox 360. I personally own Guitar Hero II, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, Guitar Hero: Metallica and Rock Band, and this list will only continue to grow (Can we say, Guitar Hero: Van Halen?).

Ars Technica has a great list of five rules all these games and future ones should follow. They’re all pretty simple and make total sense. Activision, Red Octane, Harmonix and everyone else involved in the video game genre need to take these rules as gospel as well.

Rhythm Games: The Five Commandments All Titles Must Follow

A couple of quick posts this evening. So you think it’s fun playing Gears of War 2 on your LCD HDTV? Now imagine a little bit bigger screen, like the huge display at the Dallas Cowboy’s stadium. Now that’s some real big gaming.

Big Screen Gears of War 2 Action

In the more and more crowded rhythm music games on the home video game consoles, there’s always room for one more, right? This title was announced awhile before E3, but how about the concept of meshing Legos and Rock Band? Sure. But I don’t get the relationship reasoning. The game is obviously aimed at families. I’m thinking as a guy that already has a ton of Guitar Hero/Rock Band Xbox 360 titles already in my library, this might be one of the few that doesn’t make it onto my shelf. I’ll leave final judgment till I see a track list, but think this is one of the games that utilizes the guitar controller that I’ll skip.

E3 2009: LEGO Rock Band Hands-on

You can mute this video, as the audio playing is from the trade show floor of E3 and is completely unrelated to the trailer for Guitar Hero: Van Halen. This is the first glimpse of the game that had been confirmed, but didn’t even have a release date, unlike Guitar Hero 5, Rock Band Beatles, etc. So it was finally good to get a visual confirmation, and to just see the visuals.

Unfortunately, it’s looking like a lot of this game is going to be the worst case scenario — current Van Halen lineup — meaning Wolfgang Van Halen on bass, rather than Michael Anthony (or Sammy Hagar). I am holding out hope that both will show up deeper into the game. The article at IGN below references four songs playable at E3 — “Panama,” “You Really Got Me,” “Jump” and “Ain’t Talking About Love.” All of those are Roth-era tracks. Again, I’m holding out hope that the game will have a mix of Roth and Hagar tracks. The trailer shown at the show references 25 Van Halen tracks, which is only 5 shy of my wish list that I wrote up a couple months back.

Regardless, as such a die-hard VH nut, I’ll still be purchasing this one upon release. My fingers are crossed that this one will be as much fun as Guitar Hero: Metallica (which I just snagged this past weekend — review forthcoming).

I’m pretty sure a Van Halen fanboy like myself will get my money’s worth out of this one, regardless of any shortcomings or limitations it may possess. Then again, maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Guitar Hero Van Halen Preview

Crush the CastleIt’s been awhile since I’ve posted a fun little Flash game. As you progress through the tougher and tougher castles, you get better ammo for your trebuchet. There’s something cool and satsifying about hurling projectiles at a castle built like a house of cards and see it implode on itself. I’m currently on castle 22.

Edit: Beat ‘em all, and then you can make your own levels and then go through all the levels with all the weapons (including the triple bombs, which make short work of the first 20 levels or so, with a single shot).

So it looks like a graphical decent “24″ themed is making its way to iPhones and iPod Touches. Let’s hope it’s better than the “24″ game back on the Playstation 2.

This article will come in handy for allow those fellow Guitar Heroes to fix their ailing instruments, though I gotta say anything that has the word “soldering” in it, scares me off after my college attempts to try to solder a modchip to my PlayStation.

As soon as I heard that there was going to be a Beatles-themed game, I immediately pictured the rooftop concert moment. The other venues listed in this article, didn’t but seems like if it has half of them, this game will be a step above the Aerosmith and Metallica themed video games in terms of immersing the player fully into the band’s history.
