I’ve donated whole blood many a times since high school and in college I even did the plasma thing for some extra cash. Recently, I hadn’t really donated. I’d gotten out of the habit as life got busy and in the way. But now I’m trying to get back into the swing of the things. A couple months back, I donated at a local downtown Raleigh and then went in today and did it again today and it’s a good feeling.
Basically every two months, it’s safe to donate whole blood. Granted, everyone can’t do it. But those that can, should. Did you know that a single blood donation can save three lives? The more I thought about that, the more I realized how important it is.
Blood has a relatively short shelf life and think about how many people have surgeries, accidents, etc. every single day in your local area. As I read about accidents on my local bike email lists and the like, I’m thinking that my blood could be used to save people just like me, or nothing like me. Honestly, other than an hour out of my day, the blood isn’t even missed. Drink a little more fluids, have a few more calories (donating a pint of blood will utilize about 650 calories. Not a reason to donate, but a nice fringe benefit). Your body replaces the lost blood rather quickly, and with no noticeable strain to the system.
The other reason I ask you all to join in donating is because a lot aren’t doing it. On the wall of the donation center I was at today, was at roughly 25% of their goal for August. We’re three weeks into August and it’s obvious they’re not going to make their goal in our area.
When tragedy strikes, more people donate blood. After 9/11, many blood centers were throwing away blood because they had more than they could. But make it a habit to donate as often as you can. It’s an effortless way to help people locally in need.
