This isn’t rocket science, and this will be a big ‘duh’ for most of you reading this out there, but successful blogging is all about quality original content composition.
So much blogging is posting and rehashing news and information found elsewhere on the web. I’m as guilty as any other blog of mailing in posts simply with a couple of sentences and an external link.
But looking through my page statistics, time and time again, the pages that get the largest view numbers, the longest looks and most links are the ones with original content and the personal opinion and experience.
Granted the longer the post, the more keywords you’re going to have, but I think it’s more than that. Human and search engine bot alike, more content is more interesting and unique.
Simple rules that apply to other forms of writing – write about what you know apply to blogging as well.. For a very focused blog that only reports on one topic (Apple rumors or Tar Heel athletics for example), this is really easy.
But for all of us with less focus – wanting to write about all our interests and activities, focus on writing more quality content, whatever the topic. But with more variation in content, you’ve got to be prepared for more variation in traffic as well.
Realistically, life is going to get in the way of your regular blogging, but as much as possible, write longer unique content. Don’t force it. It’s ok to occasionally have the short post and commentary. But strive for combined quality and quantity. The pair will bring you more readers, comments, inbound links and search engine bots.
