My Edge 305 stopped working this a.m., when I put it on the bike prior to my 30-mile ride. When I returned home I found this link, and tried the MODE/reset 5-second hold. Eureka! it's charging again!

You're awesome! I have an edge 500 but it will not communicate to geoladders.com so I ride with both on the bike. I love the 500 but I log my rides with the 305. Anyhow leaving for a ride the 305 was dead. I was bummed because I really enjoy taking part on the geoladders.com. I've ride. A few rides without it and then I searched garmin 305 edge broken and it led me to your post. You're the best. I can't thank you enough for taking the time to help out all your fellow riders.

Thanks for the post… would not power up or charge at all… Garmin website says to press "reset" for 3 seconds to unlock a locked device… this did not work. Pressing "reset" and the "Mode" button simultaneously for 5 seconds worked… Unit is now charging… thanks bunches…

I've fought this battle for 4 years now. The above mentioned routine always has worked for me (mode + lap), but today it simply would not work at all. I could get no screen at all despite trying to recharge and press the button combo. I decided to press 'Menu' slightly before 'Lap' and held down for ten or so seconds. That did it. Weird. Also, try making sure the unit is on a tad before you power it off after a data transfer or recharge. This seems to help it remember it's not stupid.

Awoke day 1 on vacation in California and found that I had to go for my first ride without my Garmin. Stuck to the Coast, so at least I didn't get lost. But it's not nearly as fun as taking off into the country, and knowing that the GPS will always get me home. Your fix worked, and I'm looking forward to going out tomorrow/

Thanks so much for this post… I just started having this trouble on mine. It started after the battery drain. Oh goodness, I wish I had caught it before that happened. I can't even transfer data to my computer with mine now. I hope to find a fix for it online. Thanks again for this helpful info~

This is the second edge 305 Ive had – it cost me £65 to get Garmin to send me a new one when the first one siezed up out of warranty. The replacement seized up after only 2 months and just after setting a personal best after a ride. I did what you suggested and it worked straight away – fanatastic, thank you very much.
