So Amanda and I have both been wanting to upgrade our camera for awhile. We had a nice quality point and shoot Canon camera that did a decent job, but we’ve both wanted to step it up to a digital SLR.
Well, a few days ago, we finally pulled the trigger, when we saw one of the models we were watching show up on one of the deal sites. Through Dell, of all places, we got a Canon Rebel XTi 10.1 megapixel camera (EOS 400D I believe) and it arrived today to me at work. We have barely scratched, the surface, but we’re already impressed.
Our old Canon point and shoot is great, and we won’t be getting rid of that little guy, but this new digital SLR is in a whole other league, especially when you compare pics from the two side-by-side. Just in the few shots we took tonight, the detail and clarity is awesome. While, I’m not discounting the skill of any photographer, it definitely does help to have the right tools for the job!
We took a little bit of time just to fool around with it, but it’s going to take some time to get adept as utilizing this bad boy to its fullest. We both have taken classes in photography, but it’s been many years for both of us. Hopefully, with time, some of that training will come back through using the camera, and reading up.
Even on full auto though, the thing rocks and I can already tell you the thing is going to get a lot of use, and help us up the quality of our photographic memories. One of the reasons Amanda wanted to get it was to shoot me better cycling, which should work out well. We have all winter to hone our skills with this new camera before the race season starts. Hopefully, she’ll have more opportunities to shoot me this year too!
My first impression of the unboxing and holding of the camera was amazement at how light it is. We had people tell us to spend the extra money for the higher end camera, but honestly I think this camera body will serve its purpose for us for years to come. We are not professionals by any stretch of the imagination. I’m sure the higher end camera could run circles around our pseudo high end amateur camera, but it also would have been total overkill for us.
We’ve got two lenses to get us started – the one that came with it, and an older longer lense I have from my old 35mm Canon EOS. That should do us for now. Keep an eye on our Flickr account (or the right sidebar of Keefer Madness) for more shots from our upgraded toy!
By the way, the couple pictures in this entry were all obviously taken with the camera tonight. I can’t wait to start utilizing this camera’s full potential.

Just to echo Ryan’s comments… we love the SLR camera and I am sure we’re going to be behind that camera all weekend. Now we need a trip to Hanging Rock or somewhere scenic and easy to shoot!
I love the picture I took of the close up of Bongo’s eye. Love that picture.
