So I went out last night to Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh to pick up a wedding gift for friends getting married here in a few short weeks. I also went out in search of getting my car’s remote starter and alarm back up to snuff.
Anyway, I got the present no problem and hopped from Circuit City to Best Buy and found out that I do have a lifetime warranty on the alarm from DEI, but gotta send it back to them. Oh well. I can deal with paying shipping and handling.
So by this time, it’s 8pm. I’m rolling up to CarMax on my right and glance to see if they’ve got anything cool (was looking to see if they had a S2000 honestly) and I’m kind of pissed cause there are a bunch of trees partially blocking the lot. But through the trees, I see the the distinctive rally blye of Subaru. It’s a freakin ‘04 Impreza STi!
The traffic’s right hadn turn signal turns on and I take that as a sign that I’ve got to go check it out. So cool!
So I go out with a salesman to check it out, and the thing is in pristine condition. It’s got 8250 miles on it, but looks great. He asks if I want to drive it and I say hell yeah.
The salesman is really nice, but has trouble just getting it off the lot (not real good with the 6-speed). He finally gets it to the edge of the lot and we take off down a back road toward I-540. Man! What a freaking fast and powerful car! The 1st and 2nd gears are amazing and the turbo quickly kicks in for some serious boost!
I get the thing to the onramp to I-540 and just let loose, I had the rev limiter kick in and upshift, doing 90 on the onramp like it was nothing. Quickly, I realized this car is too much.
540 has pretty sparse traffic and the thing cruises with ease. It’s very stable, handles like a dream and is fast and definitely furious. All around the STi is trouble and excessive. It’s got too much power for a daily driver (300 HP), too big a price tag and I’m sure the insurance and speeding tickets that would come standard with this car would be too much.
Regardless, I can’t explain what a rush it was to fly in this car. I was absolutely flying and it was such a cool natural high.
It’s nice to get it out of my system. While my Celica pales in comparison, it makes a hell of a lot more sense as a daily driver both to my wallet and my safety.
But man, what a car!
